I'm almost caught up with everything that happened during my vacation - just a couple more posts - but today I thought I'd tell you what I've been working on lately. My oldest daughter is now 10 1/2. She doesn't request many knit projects. I think this is partly because she also knows how to knit, and partly because she is just content with what she has. At the end of the summer she asked if I could use the yarn she had chosen at two different festivals and make her a sweater.
Since these two skeins were each a pair of adult socks worth of yarn I didn't think there would be enough. Luckily I had other sock yarn that would coordinate in color.
I started about August 21st. I have now finished the body and most of one sleeve. Once the sleeves are done I will still need to do the collar and the button (zipper?) band. There might be some patch pockets - or there might not. She was hoping it would be done earlier this month - it obviously wasn't. I am working on it, but I also know 5 pregnant women - and I usually knit or crochet something for baby showers (3 of the 5 are before the end of Nov).
So, here's the contest. When do you think her sweater will be done. The person with the closet guess (completely done - all ends woven in, pockets attached if we choose to add them, zipper sewn or buttons on, etc) will win a prize. It doesn't matter if your guess is before or after the finished time, the winner will just be the one closest.
All guesses must be placed in the comments of this post. The prize will either be a skein of handspun (if the winner is crafty), or one small project (bulky hat, dishcloth, etc - if the winner is not crafty)
Guesses can be placed here any time this week. Comments made after Saturday Sept 29th will not be entered into the contest. Anyone (family/friends/strangers) is welcome to enter.
There is one other way to enter the contest - if you send someone else here and they mention you when they enter you can have a bonus entry!

Net Bags Winner
I recently entered a contest on my mom's blog, and won! She told me I could choose a few bags for us to keep, and brought a bunch over for us to pick from. The blue one on the bottom is mine, the two on the chair belong to each of my girls.
They made my errands this past week much easier, as they fit a LOT and then when empty will fit into my pocket or other bag.

Contest Prize
I finally finished the contest prize that Noel won. She had said to make anything. So... it took me a little while to figure out what to make and what yarn to use.
I had picked up this fiber last May at the MA sheep and wool I believe.

...and then over the summer I had spun it into this yarn.

Then it was just sitting in my yarn bucket, waiting for its turn to be made into something - it is now a scarf:

...and it now belongs to Noel.

...stay tuned for the next contest (not immediately, but soon... ish)

Contest Winner
I collected all the entries to the contest and numbered them all, in order of when each person entered. I then took all those numbers to random.org and the winner was number 3. That was Noel. So... let me know what you want! yarn spun or something knit...

South Beach
This week I purposely did not post for Ten on Tuesday - I might be able to stretch for some categories, but this week's Favorite cocktails or mocktails was too much of a stretch for me (as I don't drink or like mocktails even) so I decided to skip it.
I did want to post this week though, and then I ran into a problem. The only knitting items I am currently working on are not blog-able. They are gifts for people who could (whether they do or not, who knows) read the blog.
So.... I thought I'd post about another aspect of my life. I in the middle of day 5 out of 14 days of South Beach Diet, phase one. Phase one is a pretty strict two week course in re-training your body. For these two weeks you severely limit carbs and sugar - including pasta, rice, bread, starchy veg (carrots, peas), corn, oats, potatoes, fruit, milk, etc. None of those. Which sounds pretty drastic, but I am eating lean meat and eggs and low-fat cheese, and lots and lots of green vegetables.
For breakfast I am eating protein (eggs, cheese, canadian bacon), and at least 1/2 C vegetables - usually spinach in my eggs and a can of V8. For lunch I can have protein and at least 2 Cups of vegetables, and some fat. I usually have a large salad - lettuce and fresh spinach, cucumber, pea pods, broccoli, peppers, almonds, ham or chicken breast chopped up, and small amount of dressing. For dinner how I cook the vegetables varies, but I can have once again protein, at least 2 cups of vegetables, and some fat. I have 2-3 snacks a day - usually a certain amount of nuts, or celery with cheese. I also have a scattered through the day a variety of hard sugar free candies and some sugar free popsicles.
The first day or two was pretty hard, both because it was weekend/holiday, so not my normal schedule and also because I was pretty addicted to my carbs throughout the day. I absent-mindedly grabbed a cookie at the end of a library event yesterday, and I plan to cheat a bit tonight at bookclub, but otherwise I figure I can do this for 14 days. I am letting my kids eat some of our contraband food for their lunch and breakfast - but dinner I am only making one, so they have to eat our food or cheat from it in only small ways.
On day 15 I start phase two and I can start adding back in one serving of starch (bread/rice/pasta) and one serving of fruit. I can slowly increase those to three servings a day, as long as I don't notice cravings coming back. I can also add back in 1 1/2 c milk or yogurt.
I'm doing this diet with my husband - he's done it before a couple of times while I've done most of it but not stayed strictly with it due to other circumstances (pregnant or breastfeeding usually), so it's been interesting to do it completely. I usually feel so full by the end of the day - but i still want my chocolate - maybe soon I'll have to grab some sugar-free fudgsicles. The idea is to continue with phase two until you get to your desired weight and then move into phase 3 where you still eat with the same basic guidelines but add some things back in every once in a while. Our usual course of attack has been to do phase one and phase two for a while and then slowly drift back to our normal eating habit, to return and do phase one and phase two sometime (a year or two) in the future.
Now, if you made it this far, through all my diet talk...
I realized that my last post was post number 250. A milestone number of posts and the fact that I'm sick of snow and cold... that means that it's time for a contest! Just leave a comment and you'll be entered into the contest. Get someone else to leave a comment (they have to somehow mention you in their comment) and you'll get another entry (and they are then entered also!) I'll then pick a random winner from all the entries. The only rule is that you have to make sure I have your email address if you want to be able to win (I will not be tracking people down - I'll just skip to the next random winner who is easier to contact). Oh, right, and you can comment on any post going forward until the end of the contest - not just this one... Feel free to comment more than once - each comment on a separate post will give you a separate entry - multiple comments on the same post will only result in one entry - make sense?
Oh right, you might want to know the prize.... There are two options - if you are a knitter/crocheter you might be more interested in the first, otherwise you are welcome to choose either.
Option A: You can choose some fiber in my stash and I will spin one skein to whatever weight yarn you want... plied and washed and ready to make something with.
Option B: You can choose any project that will use one skein of yarn in my stash and I will make it for you. My stash in pretty eclectic right now so that's a lot of different project options, but if you get your heart set on something that isn't in my stash we can talk... no promises.
The contest will close to entries at midnight my time zone saturday March 5th - that gives quite a while for entries, and it just so happens to be the end of phase one for me! I'll pick a winner and let you know monday march 7th.

Winner and Finishing
Congratulations to jackie, who won the mothers day contest! Email or facebook msg me your shipping information and I'll try to mail you the prize soon!
I'm in the middle of binding off the pair of brown socks. I got some matching yarn from a fellow raveler, and was able to finish knitting the Vest. I steeked and finished the ribbing and then chose to block it right in the middle of a cold, cloudy week. It took 3 or 4 days to dry. I think I'll be sewing down the steeks either tonight or this weekend and then I can post some pictures. I also have a whole roll of napkins that I finished weaving at least a month ago that I need to hem and cut apart. If I can do these nagging final steps on each of these project then not only will I have finished things to use, but I will be able to start several new projects that I've already chosen.
Off to finish the socks!

Mothers Day Contest
It's time for a contest... and since Mothers Day is coming soon, I thought it'd be fun to tie that in.
Whether you are male or female, if you have children or not, everyone has a mother.
To enter this contest just comment *on this post* with a story about your mother. It can be funny or sweet, embarrassing or praising... This will run until Sunday night (midnight) and then on Monday morning I'll randomly pick an entry and that person will win a small prize.
If you mention this on your blog/twitter/facebook/etc and others enter via you, you can get a bonus entry if they let me know who sent them in their comment.
Good luck!
PS: I'm still working on my vest and socks for my husband... luckily for him, I was almost done with the vest (steeked and all, just doing the ribbing) and ran out of the green, so while i try to track some matching yarn down, his socks get exclusive knitting.

oh right...
Before I forget, I still need some people to craft for... go down a couple posts and sign up. Blog-less people are now allowed I guess, but they still need to pay it forward somehow! (and let me know how they do, as I can't just stalk their blogs) I'll take two more people (as I will of course make something for my husband... although after these stripey socks it might take awhile before the next project for him) :)
Just a note: the items you pay forward need to be made by you, but don't have to be fibery, they can be anything made by you for someone else.

Pay it forward, with some caveats...
I saw this blog post and decided that I've seen this lots of places, I really love stalking Hattie's blog, and figured it would be fun to play - so I'm in! (especially since I have a year to come through)
The first three people to respond to this post will get something made by me! My choice. For you. This offer does have some restrictions and limitations:
1- I make no guarantees that you will like what I make!
2- What I create will be just for you.
3- It’ll be done this year.
4- You have no clue what it’s going to be.
5- I reserve the right to do something extremely strange.
The catch is that you must repost this on your blog and offer the same to the first 3 people who do the same on your blog. The first 3 people to do so and leave a comment telling me they did win a FAB-U-LOUS homemade gift by me! Oh, and be sure to post a picture of what you win when you get it! Who’s in?
If for some reason three people don't comment within a couple of days I'll open it up to people without blogs... but blog-people get first dibs :)

Y is for...
Yarn!
Back on November 23, there was a contest that was won by Heather. When she was local during New Years she looked through my stash and chose some blue goat that was waiting to be spun.
![]()
Just the past week she received her new yarn:

The specs are on Ravelry, for length and weight and such.
I also spun a bit more of the Alpaca, and I'm looking into the possibility of sending the rest off to be processed.

The girls thought taking pictures of the pregnant mommy spinning sounded like fun, that's one that Lily took.
Y is also for YAHOO!!
I finally not only finished knitting the MS3 (Swan Lake Stole), but managed to block and weave in ends...

So now, it is completely finished:

Y is also for Yet another Baby Knit!
I managed to finish the blue hat (to go along with the pink one that WyeSue sent) so the baby is now covered either way.

These first pair of booties is done, as is an light orange pair, and a green pair is about a 1/3 of the way being done.

I have a whole list of things around the house I'm trying to get done in the 20ish days I hopefully have left before the baby comes. (Things like filing away bills, moving my small stash and setting up the craddle, catching up on mending, cleaning the girls closet so they can play with toys again and I can get the baby clothes down from the shelf in there...etc) I have finished all of my big knitting projects that have been hanging over my head, except for the slippers for my husband, which he said might as well wait until next year. These tiny bits of knitting is all that is happening right now, although I really want to start a sock. Maybe before I move my stash I'll pull out yarn for a pair or two of socks and maybe a couple other things to work on later (when I start getting sleep again, but can't move my stash back yet due to said craddle being right there).
Hopefully I'll be posting a couple of times before the baby comes, we'll see. But I will make sure to let you know if it's a girl or boy at some point! ...maybe early April ;)

November 23 - Contest Winner
I didn't craft much today. I did go shopping. I know, most sane people try to avoid stores on black friday, but if there are good deals that I want I actually enjoy the whole hustle. This morning, however, I slept in a bit and only hit a couple of stores.
I then spent most of the afternoon filling in white space with a black sharpie. There was a map in a book. It wanted to be turned into a quilt (not by me, not for me). So it got blown up pretty big and a lot of the black in the black and white map turned out to be grey, therefore when it got big it had a lot of white in it. It is now black again. It actually looks pretty cool, now that the white specks are gone. It can now be taken, made into transfers, put onto cloth, and then sewn and quilted. It will have a happy life now. (I think I'm a bit tired).
Oh right, the contest is over. Thanks for all the entries. Although some of you tried to sneak a little guilt in with your entries (yes, I remember all my non-knitting UFOs), I did enjoy reading them. ...and the winner is?
ummm.. boogeyman's wife. I'll email you soon, or you can email me first, and we can discuss your prize. Sorry Jbb - someday you'll win.

November 18
Today was a long day. Usually Sundays are. No knitting was accomplished. I'm really looking forward to this next week. Thanksgiving is something I really look forward to, and the rest of the family is really excited about it to. Since we drive up to have the meal with extended family I don't even have to cook a whole meal. Another reason I'm excited about this week is the fact that very little is planned, so it should be a nice break.
I've been enjoying the contest entries so far. It will be open until Friday sometime, since I start Christmas preparations as soon as Thanksgiving is over, and this prize will be the first gift of the season.
I'm hoping to be able to squeeze some knitting in tomorrow, or some spinning... or both. Stay tuned, and good luck!

November 17 - Contest
Since you've been waiting patiently, here are the contest details. To mark both my one year blogging anniversary, and the fact that I am now over 150 posts total (posting every day really helps that move quickly, eh?), here is the contest that was delayed due to health.
How to win: Comment on this entry telling me how old your oldest WIP is and what it is. Two entries if you also give a good excuse on why it is still a WIP and not an FO. An extra entry if someone else enters and says you sent them here.
The time frame: This will stay open until the day after Thanksgiving. So the winner will be drawn sometime on Friday!
The who: anyone is eligible (yes husband and jbb, you too). Even if you googled here for something else, you can enter. If you want to win though, you do need to make sure to leave an email address so I can contact you, otherwise I'll skip you over if your name is drawn.
The prize: Either some handspun yarn, or something equally nice from my stash (if you would rather not have handspun). An amount possible for making a hat/scarf/small bag. Some negotiations will be possible, but final decision on what gets mailed to you is mine.
For those who don't know still, a WIP is a Work in Progress. A FO is a Finished Object. These do not have to be craft related, although that is the intention. If you aren't a crafter and still want to enter you may. We all have things we start and mean to finish and need to finish but end up sitting for a long long time.
Have fun thinking of things - good luck!

November 15
With this post I am half way through the month. I think this blogging daily thing will not continue into December - I don't want to feel like I have to every day - but it is good practice, and almost a habit now!
Today I did manage to knit half a pattern on the lace scarf during Lily's ice skating. She reached her goal (10 times across the width of the rink and back - my little marcher, she only fell umm.. 4 times?) so instead of re-casting on the toe to my husband's sock we made ginger snap cookies. Want to see? Not the cookies from today, but almost the same... yummy.
Tonight was the church craft night - with the help of some people, we managed to cut out pieces for 6 complete costumes (mary, joseph, 2 shepherds and 2 wisemen) for a still nativity that the children will do for our Christmas party. Now I just need to make sure each packet has everything it needs and then hand them out to the willing victims to sew. They do look fairly simple, but they still need to be done, and I don't want to do them all! No way that's happening. I think I'll keep Mary to do.
Now I can go watch a bit of Les Miserables and zone for a bit before sleep.
oh right, I did find some safe sick meds. I got some vicks and some similar shower steams. ...and I did sleep last night and feel much better today. Amazing what some sleep will do.
...and don't worry. I didn't forget that I mentioned a one year blog-anniversary contest. It will just happen a bit later in the month than my actual anniversary, but it will happen. (I know you were all just so worried - right jbb?)

November 3
Today I managed to finish the body of the second (smaller) baby sweater. Hopefully I'll get to the sleeves tomorrow and can then show off another finished project - either way I'll try to remember to snap a pictures tomorrow afternoon.
Although I didn't realize it until this morning, yesterday was my one year blog anniversary. Looking back, it's been quite a year. So come on, take a look back - you know you want to! You can just scroll down and look at the archives on the side bar and click around. I'll wait right here for you. Come on, go! Back? Good. Have fun? Great. Now excuse me while I go blow my nose again and then go back to bed. Perhaps a contest later based on the past year of blogs. Probably. After I wake up and don't need my tissue box. Ummm.. sometime later this week - look for details then.

K is for...
Kompleted! :)

Yeah, I know it's a stretch, but I finished the yarn pirate socks! I've loved the yarn, loved it so much I cast on the day it arrived from my SP10, Chelle. It made an early appearance when the Yarn Harlot was in Northampton. It then got set aside through the summer - I wasn't knitting much, and when I was, it wasn't on these! I finished them Wednesday night and look forward to wearing them! ...plus, I believe I am winning the second part of the contest with my husband.
Of course, to win the contest I also had to plan our quilt. (the contest was clarified in the comments to the above entry).

There's the sketch of the quilt - and I measured our old one. It was 105 by 92.5 inches (the back of it is a king size flat sheet). Since we purchased 7 different materials (one middle square, three lights, three darks). The finished width for the strips should be just under 1.5" - so now we just need to figure out seam allowance and wash the fabrics before we can cut and start to sew.
K is also for Keen. As in, I'm keen to find out what I win. (when we were discussing what the winner would get, I said if I win I'd get some great yarn and fiber, he said I'd get those either way - I suggested socks, but he said I also get that either way...) So, what happens? I win the contest and start a pair of socks for him.

This is yarn that I finished back in June. I originally purchased the fiber from Leah at Yarn or a Tale. I did a pretty standard toe, but for the rest of the sock I am looking through Cat Bordhi's new book (New Pathways for Sock Knitters), which my husband finally let me touch last night.
...and finally, K is for Kids:

A couple weeks ago, my daughter Lily made a knotted necklace as part of her homeschool enrichment group. They were taught (by me) some simple knots and then they each made their own unique necklaces. She finished it very quickly and was quite impressed with herself. She told me I could put the picture on my blog, or on Ravelry (sheesh, she refered it by name, talk about crafts much?). She also wants to make more soon.
On another note, I am still looking for one specific spinning tool. It's a card that has different thicknesses of black lines, each of them labeled with the correct wpi number, so you could hold up a strand of yarn and get an idea by comparing the yarn with the lines... I know that probably doesn't make much sense, but I think it'd be useful and I have seen them, somewhere. Anyone know where (online) I can get one?

J is for...
Joy!

I actually turned the heel today (I keep typing hell and then having to fix it). I just have about 30-40 more rows and I'll be done with the second short sock and win the second part of the competition with my husband.
J is also for random Junk!
I talked to Hannah (who won the contest back when I was at the letter C), and started up a couple washclothes. I pulled out some random cotton and made up a pattern. I really like how it worked out.

The diagonal rib mixing with the way the colors moved - very cool.

I also grabbed a skein of Blue Sky Cotton and made a couple of others...

These will be mailed off... soon?
Hopefully it won't be another week before I post again!

G is for...
Gifts!
Hannah of Arkansas (Missouri?) won the contest for my first finished object. I will be emailing her and mailing something off soon. In the meantime I am working to try to finish some of my other projects, because...
G is also for Goals:
I'm working on the yarn pirate sock again. I still love this yarn and this colorway. Now that I'm working on it consistently it is moving along a bit. I like a fair amount of ribbing, so I will be starting that soon, and then it will move quickly and I'll be done with the first sock!

Spinning was accomplished last week. I have yet to measure it, but it is now dry and looks very nice.

I realized I never photographed my bracelet. If you remember, my first attempt was huge and silly, so it turned into a small bowl. This second attempt, done earlier this summer, is almost perfect. Another attempt once I finish some more things.

I also thought I should show the socks my husband made for Lily. She danced around in this and kept telling people that the top has a ruffle. This weekend we left the house and everyone was wearing tofutsies. (My husband's socks made by me, everyone else's made by him). We all had happy feet.

So, as I said, goals. My husband offered me a challenge. He is currently working on a sock (one from Cat's new book, out of Valley Yarns, Franklin) for him. He has challenged me to finish both of my yarn pirate socks before he finishes one of his socks. ...and to finish all *current* projects before he finishes his pair. I think it'll be a stretch, but it is possible for either of us to win. (The lace scarf is not considered current, and MS3 - while it's considered current in general, I don't know if it is part of this challenge).
My current projects are:
the yarn pirate sock
the project from knitting lingerie style
some more I cord rugs
MS3
my lace scarf
I think that's it. If I forgot something, let me know!

F is for...

Finished!

Yes, the Melon Shawl is done. It's been done almost a week. (Yes, homeschool began, many things happened - blogging didn't). She loves it. I haven't actually blocked it, as I know it's going to be worn everywhere as the weather gets cooler. I'll block it when I have to wash it. There were three entries for this project in my contest, so I'll have to random it up and post that soon.
The yarn was Dancing sock yarn from Knitpicks, bordered by KPPPM. It was worked in US 8 and 6, and the pattern is in Victorian Lace Today. I adapted it slightly as I ran out of the two skeins I had of Dancing, and then adapted the border to fit on the slightly shorter rectangle. It took forever it seemed (I started it in July), but it's amazing, once I put up the contest I actually worked on a couple projects for more than five minutes at a time - and it's amazing - when you put some real time into knitting, progress gets made.

I've been working on the spinning (not consistantly of course) and I'm about half done with the little buns of purple and green - then the plan is to navajo ply it and see what I end up with.

I have completely a couple of I-cord mini rugs for the preschool group. They go pretty quickly (US size 17 needles, 5 strands of yarn, 4 stitches looped around and around until you have about 6-8 yards) especially during tv/movie watching.

I have one currently in progress, and I have taught one of the other mothers how to knit and she's half done with her first one (after about a week working on it). These are moving right along and I'm having fun playing with the different colors. I had a bucket of cheap (washable) yarn donated to the cause (from my mom) and when I first got it it was overflowing - the bucket and an additional bag... it now fits in the bucket and keeps slowly going down.

Oh right, we also went peach and apple picking last Saturday. Yesterday (Tuesday) brought this:

We had one this morning that had been in the fridge overnight. SO GOOD! I might need to do some more, as those 9 jars won't last very long (the other smaller jars are peach syrup. Friday will be the first run of applesauce - as I will be showing some other women how to can yummy applesauce. More batches will be made over the next month or so.

D is for...
...Done!
no, I'm not done with anything yet, but I am done planning for the homeschool co-op we seem to have started. Everything started today. Curly had her first day of Joyschool and even though it was a bit chaotic, she seems to have enjoyed it and was very excited to find out she'll have it again on Thursday (yes, every Tuesday and Thursday... it hasn't quite sunk in to her yet). Lily had her first organized school experience. She'd normally be starting kindergarten this year, but since she is reading and wants to learn we set up a group to do homeschooling with the big kids while the siblings are attending Joyschool. Tuesdays will be history, Thursdays will be different rotating enrichments - all done by the moms. We've been planning for a while, and it went well (with many tweaks needed of course) I think. I don't have to teach until next week for the older kids, and the end of October (or maybe the end of September) for the younger ones, so I get to watch and help (and provide a house) until then.
D is also for Delighted!
My Knitters Virtual Vacation Swap package has arrived. At least I assume it's that - it's time for my vacation, it's from the UK, and I don't think my SP has sent off something that would arrive this quickly. My family was so great about being local tourists (and very excited about the whole swap) that I'm waiting until everyone is home before I open it... pictures next time!
D is also for Duh!
Thanks to everyone who's already entered the contest - and yes, family are welcome to enter - but my sweet sweet knitting husband will be excluded if he doesn't get an entry in soon, as he can see my current up to the minute progress. The contest is still open - and probably will be for another week or more, but you never know when the planets will align and the knitting mojo will kick in and something will be done, so get those entries in!
